Using Postcards (E-Cards) for Promotion?

I've noticed some vendors offer scripts that enable your website visitors to send E-Cards to their friends. To be honest I don't see much of a difference between that and using a simple "Recommend It" script so visitors impressed with your site can tell others about it.

Does anyone here use e-cards to promote your website, and have you found it to be effective, maybe more effective than the simple "recommend this site to a friend?" I'm curious to know...

I don't use it. I have seen some topical oriented sites use these very successfully.

I would use it in a heartbeat but I don't want to violate copyright laws on pictures or graphics.

I once hunted down a site so I could send a friend of mine a Buffy the Vampire Slayer ecard - he's a big fan. ;)

It can work if you do it right.

I use ecards on my own site with my own photos and it works well. Checking the logs I see people coming back and also the people that they send to visit at least once, and often more.

So i guess it's a "your mileage may vary" thing. That's cool, I'll probably consider it somewhere down the line. Since I'm an amateur photographer, I could use my own photos as well :D

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to such a script, Mac version if possible. Post here if permissible, or else sticky me.
