What do professional, independent webmasters do?

Naive question of a newbie...

Dear seniors on this forum: If you are not employed nor do freelance work - ie, if you work only on your pages - how does your workday look like?

I am asking this because I wondered about the effort it takes until a page makes enough money - say with adsense - to feed and shelter somebody. More importantly, I would also like to know where you put your emphasis (linkbuilding, content, etc) and how much time you spend a day working on your pages.

I just startet mine as an evening-project three months ago, currently stick with less than 50 visitors a day and am surprised how much time and effort it takes to get things kicked off.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Emodo, does your wife know you're engaged? ;) If not, you should schedule them a little further apart.

Wolfadeus, these things can indeed take some time to gather momentum especially when you can only afford to work part-time as you have only in the evenings. It's hard to concentrate only on one aspect of this business, as there are so many aspects that need attention, and one person can only do so much. As you build up more spare cash you can start to contract out work to freelancers or the like, and things tend to move quite quickly then (IMO).

Ha!, I'm just practicing for the wedding.

About working, I will admit it is sometimes hard to work alone. You just have to figure out what works for you.

I pretty much work all day, but on my terms. I do most of my programming early in the morning (in my bathrobe and slippers) then will shower/breakfast, etc. around 10.

Deal with daily issues like customer support, bug fixes, bookkeeping, lunch, Tumblebugs, etc. till the kids get home around 3.

Homework duty, dinner, laundry, etc. till tuck in at 9.

Sometimes back to work until 11 or so on programming.

But some days I just goof off.
