HI, My computer wont start. I get to the start up screen and then it restarts. I have tried the various safe modes (using f8) and still no results. Any ideas?

before anything drastic, make sure your mouse and keyboard are fully functional. I've noticed XP going funny when my other keyboard was not connected "fully" and it caused start up probs

Acternaweb,
Did you create an emergency boot disk? (If so, try that.)
Did this PC pass the M$ XP Compatibility Advisor test?
Is this the first boot attempt after installing XP?
More details would be helpful...
Good luck,
Jim

The PC is realtively new (Feb.) and XP was pre loaded. Last nite the computer was fine. Now it is in an endless loop between the windows time elapse image and the start up screen.
I do not have a start up disk, cause foolishly I relied on XP not to kill it... Appreciate your help

Acternaweb,
Unless you've contracted a "boot sector virus", it sounds like an "infant mortality" hardware failure...
Time to check out the warranty, I think. :(

For what it's worth XP is the biggest mistake I've made in a long while. I have recently purchased a high-spec laptop... and the speed is outrageously slow. Add to that periodic crashes, nothing being where I expect it to be, and no XP support for several vital applications and I am having a terrible experience.
I would advise steering clear until/unless all these glitches are resolved. Isn't the term "bleeding edge" technology?

Acternaweb I had the same thing happen on my Windows 2000 machine right when I really needed it...I spent hours going through MSKB articles but the end solution was to revert to an old backup (it was either that or reformat and start over). I was fortunate to have DriveImage backups.

Thanks, It has to be a hardware issue, because I am not getting jack past the start up screen. Thankfully it is still in the orginally warranty. Hopefully the twinkies can determine what it is an get me the new part ASAP.
Thanks for your help

Have you tried to load the restore CDs that came with the PC?
