I'm considering starting my first blog as the topic I want to create a site about is more a current events type of thing and less of an evergreen content subject. So I have some questions, what is the best blog software if I want my own custom design and domain, where should Adsense be placed for best results, and where do bloggers get their traffic? I find it hard to believe SE's would give them much seeing as they have everything on one page, so how would you do SEO right?

Hi knights1

Aer you thinking of installing the blog software on your own server? If so then many people go with Wordpress (it's free). There are alternatives you have to pay for such as Moveable Type. I'm a web programmer and I find the information on this software pretty confusing - prepare for a sharp learning curve. If you are only posting occasionally (e.g. once per day) then it would be easier just to add a new paragraph to your page and FTP it.

I have blogs on Blogspot because its an easy option - but I haven't really altered them apart from adding Adsense in one template.

Blogs can be promoted much like any website (asking for links etc) but are unlikely to get links from DMOZ. But you are more likely to get links from other blogs and you can add to Blog Directories and RSS Feed Directories.
