Strange website issues

Has anyone experienced this...

I am in the process of redesigning a website for a client. He wanted to see some of the changes, so I uploaded a page for him to see. But he couldn't view the changes, even after he refreshed his browser.

I even had a few people, in different locations and with various isp providers, preview the site to see what the saw - everyone viewed the site as I did - with the changes.

I then had my client capture a screen image and e-mail to me, as I also did for him, and to my frustrations - his screen image is of the old page.

The only thing I thought of was his previous isp connection, which was dial up with some type of compression accelerator that cached the pages for faster viewing. Is it possible that this could be causing the problem, even though he now has dsl? Any other ideas?

Simply refreshing the browser sometimes won't clear the local cache. Depending on the browser it can be different, but shift-refresh will work for Microsoft Internet Explorer. (Hold down the Shift key while clicking the Refresh icon.) It might also be the case that his local ISP is caching for him, and then there may not be much you can do but wait. Another possibility would be to give him the IP address instead of the domain (123.4.5.67 vs. example.com).

He may have to clear out his temp files. Is that what the Shift-Refresh does?

No, shift-refresh is supposed to force the browser to get the latest version of the page from the server rather than relying on it's cached version. Clearing the temp files deletes that cache.

Thanks Bill, your advice worked. He tried it and was finally able to view the updates.

check - "every visit to the page"

will always download the current version....
