Traffic problems

Iam not sure what it is. I own a dating, social community site. I do "ok" traffic around 10k uniques a day. I wanna expand my traffic to do at least 50k uniques a day. What do you guys think is the key to get to that level. Do i need an SEO? Do i need to start paying for advertising? What steps would you take on promoting a site that has been around for years, very well known name within the community and is very addictive to first time members which tend to stay and register once they find out about it. However,besides the quality of your site,have you got any plan advertising?As I know,cost on advertise is so necessary.It seems true that most sites like yours spent some @ affiliate programs at the very first beginning.

I really never paid for advertising, it was all pretty much from word of mouth or just from members inviting members. I was thinking of an affiliate program since i do offer premium membership. Are affiliate program really that big of a deal?
