I belong to several forums and add my URL in my signature, resulting in hundreds if not thousands of posts with my URL. Do search engines penalize websites for this?

It's too common to penalize IMO. They just don't give much weight to the links. Also, most forum software now integrates the 'nofollow' tag to discourage sig spamming.
