Freenetname

trying to terminate my sccount.

Ok about 18 months ago I signed up with Freenetname. They where offering a free .co.uk domain and 20 megs of webspace for free... Only catch was that you had to use their dial up for FTP and email etc. (fare enough when you get a free domain and some space) so I have been using the service (to the letter) dial up every day (sometimes more than once) to download my email and usualy I also update my website at least once a week. Today I received some snail mail from them saying that since I had not used my account within the last 30 days they would be terminating my account as of 30th of this month.

I have ftp logs on my webspace showing dates that files where updated. I have a deleted email folder full of emails to me@ my domain.co.uk and heres the clever bit.... The google cache shows my old pages whereas my site shows the new pages ...this means that I have updated my site within the past month. I have sent this info to Freenetname... do you think I will get a favourable responce???? :(

bearing in mind that it's actually a lot cheaper to pay for registration of a domain name and hosting than it is to use the freenetname dial up every day, you might be better off abandoning the site and starting from fresh elsewhere.

if the domain name is vital, then your hands are tied - either transfer your domain name for about £94 + VAT (transfer would probably have been free if you'd paid for a domain elsewhere) or keep hosting with freenetname until the domain expires, then transfer the domain via nominet (saves you £94 + VAT but site is unavailable for a couple of weeks) and use paid hosting elsewhere. you can then use a free or cheap dial up instead of the freenetname dial up.

free just isn't as free as it seems ...

To be honest you are right... And to be honest Freenetname are terrible. I am just out to try and prove a point with them. Most people would have signed up with little or no knowledge of the web and just used it to host a personal webpage.. I just want to see what their reaction will be to someone who doesnt like getting messed about :)

I'm currently using FNN. I am going to ask them to terminate my account and detag my domain name IMMEDIATELY. This way I should be able to register the same domain elsewhere within a month. If they do not detag it quickly then I will simply point out that they can be held accountable as it is now a copyrighted word.

How did you go about setting a copyright to your domain. can you stickymail me your donain so I can see it.. Just curious. Thanks.

chris and mack - my money is on freenetname to do very little, if anything at all for both of you.

it's not copyright on your domain that you need, you need to register the name as a trademark.

in the uk, look at the patent office website at www.patent.gov.uk

you can either apply yourself or use a trademark attorney. see www.itma.org.uk

well I am pleased to anounce that Freenetname have done the right thing and reactivated my acount for free... So that arent all that bad really.

yes they are. They just can't afford to lose another customer. Why your with FNN it keeps XO Communitations (the partner company) interested. If FNN lose their customers them XO will pull out on their current deals.
