reason for wanting to get adsl: working from home sometimes, general home use, occasionally downloading the odd big file, always on email (ideally from my own domain, not the isp domain), being able to retrieve files from my pc when i'm somewhere else, perhaps hosting a web server to demo stuff when i'm somewhere else
current packages under consideration
* pipex (because it's remarkably cheap - no set-up, swap yr old modem for an adsl one and £22 a month, but with an accompanying repuation for poor customer service)
* eclipse (set-up fee, no free modem, similar monthly costs - comes with a reputation for good service and a static ip address)
* plusnet (similar package as eclipse)
* nildram (similar package again - people speak of them highly)
questions:
1) anybody have observations on the providers above - specifically is it worth the risk on pipex's poor reputation to save £150? (i'd also like to get it installed quite soon)
2) do the isps all offer virtually the same speeds, or is their backbone a significant factor in the speeds you get? if so, who has a bit of backbone?
3) static ip address - worth having rather than a dynamic one for the purposes listed above?
4) anything else i should be aware of when making my choice?
thanks in advance
miles!
2) i believe they are all effectively reselling the BT service so there is no difference, but contention ratios may differ, eg the more users who share the service the slower it may be, for instance i think bt is 50/1 and clara for instance offer one at 20/1 which is more expensive but potentially better.
4) check the modem (if supplied) is compatable with your system, eg. AMD processors can be a problem with the alcatel modem modem
