My sitemap is starting to get too long (over 100 links). We plan on adding 100+ pages of content over the next month.

We like to have a direct link to each content page from our sitemap because the pages seemed to get indexed by Google faster.

If I create a directory for each type of content on the sitemap (2 layer deep sitemap) but don't list each article individually can I still expect Google to quickly index?

Please provide suggestions.

Thank you!

Having a comprehensive sitemap really "flattens" a site, ie, lets spiders get to articles in less steps. I don't really believe it helps all that much with SEO especially with sites with large sitemaps. I can see the advantage with sites with a lot of dynamic content or a lot of pages that spiders would not normally find. That being said, I do use Google's XML sitemap tool. Check it out, I think it is what you need, but it won't help you with the other engines.

Make the sitemap as flat as possible, so if you have enough content then only index the main pages for each section.

Then setup pages that index down to each content page for each section.

But, don't forget traditional SEO practices. The standard "sitemap" page probably doesn't have too much going for it.
