What helps you work?

Music, silence, coffee or what?

Hi all, just a littel Friday afternoon type subject...

What do you do to help you work?

For me it's the following:

  • Inspiration: The magic flute
  • Deep thought: Total silence
  • Going through the motions: Current favourite - Coffee and the Dandy Warhols

Also, feeding the ducks in the park is favourite for calming me down when I'm stressed ;)

Somebody said earlier about that sudden realization that it's dark outside. Silence is best for that, changing cd's adds a sense of time.

I just love it when I can't think of anything else, I often find myself opening the fridge and wondering what the hell I'm doing or perhaps (in extreme cases) getting my coat on for no apparent reason.

Such is the purety of thought when working on something really interseting ;)

OK, Im kinda strange maybe....... ;)

Depending on how the day has gone is how my music is selected. I have my main system tied into my home theater system. Sound Blaster Live card, digital out to my thx system. I will listen to many genres of music, everything from country, classical, techno, rock, oldies, kentucky bluegrass, opera, soft rock, some rap, and such.... And sometimes I like it really loud, im talking pictures falling off the wall loud.... Nothing like having two base cubes at each end of the living room to wake the neighbors. :)

If I really wanna drown out what is going on around me, Ill slip the headphones on and let loose......

Ill usually drop a winamp visual up in a small corner of the screen (21" of heaven baby.......)

I have cut down on the coffie over the past few years. You all would LOVE the way I used to make it. When I was going to school for electronics and programing I would make a pot with 10 scoops (real scoopes). And man ohhh man, talk about waking you up. After a few years of drinking it that way, its like one day I just didnt want anymore.

So Ill hit a energy drink (and yes I know that guarana is a caffine equivelant, something like 1 1/2 times) but that fizzy slightly carbonatedness makes all the difference. Plus its blue, need I say more???

Then as I go thru the day, Ill have a few glasses of plum wine..... :)

Thats me in a nut shell, SORTA....... ;)

Big glasses of water and deep quiet.

(Man, do I feel like an ascetic! I should have said Belgian beer and high volume Moby - but that's when I party, not when I need to create.)

Silence.

There's something about the dead silence (or close to it) of late at night. Peak concentration levels come at around 4 a.m., by 8 a.m. I am uploading, by 8:30 doing maintenace and updates. Grab a few hours sleep and then at it again.

I work in the music industry so I listen to music ALL the time... except when I'm designing. I'll listen to music right up until I fire up Photoshop or Homesite. Then it's silence.

Coffee is good... definately!

Yeah. I'm used to working in a dorm room or other places on campus. Its impossible to get in 'the zone' during the day, anywhere. The best solution is to get a wireless laptop and hide somewhere in the library, but the even the littlest distractions keep me from running at peak performance, and besides - my laptop sucks.

So, the best solution is to hit the sack, then wake up around 2-3am, put the headphones on, and just work until breakfast. There are absolutely no distractions.

Silence. No radio, tv, phone - just the kb. I think that's why I do so much late night and early morning around here - just because it's quiet.

deja vu:

You didn't know it, but you just passed the moderators entrance exam PapaBear.

i cant function without several gallons of tea every day ... and i need company to help me work ... it can be very lonely working from home sometimes, even just the few hours while the kids are at school ... capital gold in the background is good for company

it is much easier for me to get some serious designing done without the ever-present temptation of WebmasterWorld lurking in the background...

i know that one too well ... although when the cable goes down i want to be online more than when it's working normally ...

I love the silence of night but......

Well, daytime is a whooooole new ballgame.
On goes my PA (roundabouts 750 'good' watts), and out comes Jeff Beck, Stones, Cachau, Hendrix, Santana......

HI all this is a fun post.

I like to work very late at night when I'm designing and coding for my sites. I find that coffee and cigarettes are great to keep my mind on the work. No music for me sometimes I'll have the news on in the background. Another thing my PC is on the floor and I lie down to type, dont ask me why just borught it downstairs once and never looked back. What a fantastic job we all have, I spent so many years working for other people and just got so tired of it now I'm my own boss and it's just great. Webmaster world is great when I found it I thought wow there are others just like me, I thought I was alone in the way I work but seems as though we all have many things in common.

you name it i do it.

tonights speciality will be coffee, interspersed with tea, fizzy drinks a few sandwiches and tons of ciggaretes. With various music from Llyod Cole, Craig Armstrong, to Badly Drawn boy and Zero7 (nothing to hectic - keep that for clubbing and parties). Followed by a shower and breakfast before i start work in about 6 hrs. (rewind > actually i suppose one would call this work).

coffee...lots...but that isn't specific to web work, I just drink a lot of coffee

cigs every hour or so...takes me away from the monitor and lets my eyes adjust

music...different things for different jobs...currently I'm testing to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan...I've got a new domain to open up this afternoon which will get panicky and is likely to require Sahara Hotnights and The Hives...etc etc
