Truly Dreadful websites

Is it just Denmark or are all small biz sites this bad?

Hi all
I live and work in Denmark and to source new clients I regularly browse the directories for ghastly sites that belong to successful companies. Sure, it's mostly guess work ;)

The state of the average small business website here in .dk is truly terrifying.

Here is a no exaggeration list of what I find in 6 out of 10 sites:

  • 90% are made with Front Page, the rest with something called 'Stones web writer'
  • Chunky buttons come as standard with optional unreadable text.
  • The 'combination lock' hit counter, proudly displayed in the middle of the page
  • Frames are universal, usually complete with java menus that won't run in anything but IE
  • Splash page, but not a groovy flash jobbie, just some lame text saying 'click to enter our site'
  • Spinning 'email us' logo, or a quill, busy scribbling on some parchment. Sheeesh!
  • The legendary 'optimized for' links at the bottom of the page. In extreme cases, you don't get to see the site unless you upgrade to Netscape 4 or higher... Even if you're using NS6
  • No content whatsoever.

My question is: Is it just over here or are all small business sites so ghastly.

What are they like where you are?

Nick

And just so you know, as far as wizzy wigs go, Frontpage is not half bad. Considering that 80% of the browsers online are IE it gets my vote for accurately depicting a design 80% of the time before you post.
