New Pages Experience = Organic Reach Crash

Hello, we are a media company that creates articles and that drives traffic mostly from big facebook pages.

We still had classic pages. We never upgraded to the new page experience.

3 days ago, Facebook automatically upgraded all of our pages to the New Page Experience.

Since then, our organic reach collapsed.

For an exemple, on most of our pages, when we posted a viral article, it got around 30000 link clicks.

Now, the same viral article will get 1000 link clicks.

Before an article would reach around 200000 people, now: 15000 people.

All this because of the New Page Experience. As anyone experience something like this?

Thank you

I don't know if this will help anyone, but we managed to solve the problem today. The blog has a normal reach on the FB page again.

What we did is stop posting links on another FB page, but only on the main FB page. Respectively, we have 2 facebook pages, each with its own theme, and we published the links on these 2 pages (but they were never duplicated). But now one fB page is empty, and links are published only on the main page.

The other thing that was changed - the profile / author who published the articles now only publishes our links. Before that, the author himself also published links of another domain on another FB page.

One of these things worked, because literally the next day, after a very long dry spell, everything was back to normal. I don't know if it will help anyone, but it seems to me that the New page experience, according to its algorithm criteria, is not completely identical to the old system, which is why there are situations where many pages suffer.

@oscarsq I think was just a coincidence... Maybe you removed old posts, or your page restrictions was lifted because this limitations are for a time period and depends by how many violations had before, 3 days, 7 days, 30 days.
The bad part is we don't know what violations and limits are on our account because Facebook is not transparent...
My recommendation is to delete old post , keep maximum 1 weeks because they scan all content every time when a change to system are made.
One month ago I had a post false detected as sexual content and account limited, after appeal, post was restored but account under risk alert remained....
We have no idea what is behind this algorithm and how better is synchronized ...

@copperpaw

we have never had any penalties or restrictions. Always everything green. But about the coincidence, of course, you may be right.

@porioo

@Benjamin: Hello, following what you said about the link redirect: We did a test. We cloned our website with a brand new domain name completely different. We testing the new links on all our facebook pages.

Link Reach is the same: catastrophic.

So no matter what the domain name is, the reach is similar.

@porioo I don't understand. The person I know actually and is a hit with the redirect. I looked at Facebook's terms of service and it didn't say that redirecting is prohibited. I think I will try

So, I have a Facebook Page with around 1 million real likes / followers. When I have no reach penalty, I get between 100,000 and 300,000 reach per post. When Facebook decides to give my Page a penalty, that number usually drops to 30,000 - 50,000 reach. I never figured out what causes these penalties. The only thing I know is that sometimes they seem to last 1 day, sometimes 7, and sometimes 30.

Penalties aside, on the morning of Friday, June 9th, my Page was automatically switched to the New Pages Experience. Ever since the switch was made, my reach has dropped to 5,000 – 30,000 per post. This is catastrophic. Since 2014, I’ve never seen such a low reach. Engagement is basically non-existent. So, since Friday, I’ve removed pretty much all new posts that I posted on Facebook because they are useless and are not seen by any of my followers.

If nothing is done on the Facebook side to solve the problem, it's clearly the final nail in the coffin for my Page. But then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was intentional. External links are an exit to the Facebook News Feed, their primary source of revenue. Facebook doesn’t get paid and probably lose money from links. They much rather give reach to images, videos and reels, which keep people in the Feed and generate revenue. And Zuckerberg often blamed media companies for tarnishing the reputation of his platform because of fake news and disinformation, so by dramatically cutting the reach to external links, he essentially killed two birds with one stone.

But there’s one thing Zuckerberg is forgetting: news and viral content are what attracted people to Facebook in the first place. Without this, I doubt Facebook has any meaningful future. People are not interested in looking at thirty photos of aunt Karen’s new vacuum cleaner. People like to be entertained, read short articles and look at pictures. Sure, the younger generation might prefer short videos like TikTok and Reels, but they don’t even represent 10% of Facebook’s total users. So, I think by losing articles and external links, they will be losing much of their users.

But Zuckerberg has much bigger plans with Meta and the Metaverse. Maybe he wants to get rid of Facebook after all. Now that his company is worth more than half a trillion dollars, he can take much bigger risks without having to fear monetary losses. With the presence Facebook has in the world and its 1.9 billion daily users, it will be relatively easy for him to promote his new Metaverse platform when the time comes. According to Facebook, Apple and many other tech giants, the future is the Metaverse, so the race to build the best one has begun. And I think once the Metaverse is brought to life, Facebook’s existence will be meaningless.

So, I would say, if you have a Facebook Page and care about it, prepare for the worst, as reach might never come back.

@janvitos Yes there are other threads on sites and there are all the page owners who are currently being impacted after moving to the new version. I wonder if it's not related to the threat of some courts against Bill C-18 (you can type that on the net if you don't know). I sent 5 messages to support today with no news. My statistics on the photos this month are incredible 12.5 million reach on my page of 700k +130% increase and yet the links are all blocked and from different media very well known in France. So nothing to do with a domain name since I can test different ones. I will try the redirection, I have nothing more to lose and I will let you know if it works well. If anyone manages to reach the real Meta support I would like to be informed. People report that it is a bug recognized by Meta and that it is being fixed, I remain a little skeptical...

@benjamin: Wow, C-18… you may be right! Just read this article and it makes perfect sense to me: [beta.ctvnews.ca...]

But I don’t understand why you are impacted if you are from France…

I also sent many Mega Support request, still no answer. I will post them right here when they will answer.

I know people with pages and still have reach on link share. Pages are upgraded to new experience… that means, links are not completely dead, for me, may 19th was last day with traffic, when I share a link, I have maximum 40 people online, when this limit is reached, dropping… I think they count and have a limit …
In past I had similar issues, but not so drastic, and after few days everything comes back (when that happened, I removed all shared links and wait 2, 3 days before start posting again)

Now nothing works…

You page quality is green ? And is recommended?

@copperpaw and @ball my page has been green for several months, I had the switch to the new version on January 25, 2023. At that time, I had a very significant drop in the photo and link level. My salary and link click statistics were halved. The month after that was completely unblocked... but for 3 days. I can't explain it, I had my reach organic back, the clicks were as before but with the new version. It shows that Facebook is doing it voluntarily I feel. How to explain that France is impacted? Partners are now only redirecting here. Native links no longer click on all other pages. I find that really strange. I managed to get an email from a news manager, sent via Linkedin by the boss of Facebook Europe, but he didn't respond to my three reminders. This situation is becoming unbearable. I saw people who had invested 100/200,000 euros in advertising pages. Facebolk is trying to tell them bye bye investment? I really hope this is a bug that will be fixed sometime in June.

Hello, Has anyone experienced any changes? I had almost back to the original organic access for 4-5 days, but yesterday the organic reach on all pages dropped to zero again...
And the online counter has also gone stupid. (whos.amung.us) When I had 600 people online on my website a few days ago, the online counter showed as if every article was viewed by one person. I am sure they are doing something at facebook

I got a new message from Facebook Support today. Here is what they said. It does not make any sense:

Please be informed that Classic page and New page experience are 2 different categories so when you switched it, you basically changed your account algorithm to the New page experience meaning your account reach will be competing with the other pages that are New page experience as well.

It seems FaceBook "updated" their algorithm in May and many users are complaining about the sudden drop. This post links to that new information: [webmasterworld.com...]

the redirect gives good results. I don't see anything in the terms of service that prohibits it.

Anyone got anything new?

No news, but if the redirects gives goods results, that's mean they put a limit on our domains. Interesting, i will try! thanks for sharing with us!

Hello, can you explain, what does it means, redirect? How do you do it?

you need a script that redirects from domain name A to domain name B. It must be fast. so you have to take a server and a domain name. contact in developer to code the application

@Benjamin: By « good results » you mean that your reach became 100% normal? We tried the redirect and we have several domains and a lot of facebook pages and it did not work. We used cloudflare for the redirect.

How did you do it?

yes the reach is totally back to normal but I don't know if I will continue, I can't find anywhere if this method is authorized by Facebook? You have to contact a developer to do a script to write from one domain name to another

I get a response now, more clear than before, this is:

"Thank you for your email.

In order to protect the effectiveness of our enforcement efforts, we may not share granular details about how our systems identify violations, especially because we don't want people to use this information to get around our review systems.

We may block people from doing something on Facebook when:
1. Something you posted or shared seems suspicious or abusive to our security systems.
2. Messages or friend requests you sent were marked unwelcome.
3. You've done something that doesn't follow our Community Standards.

The length of a block depends on the severity of the violation and your history on Facebook.

To avoid blocks like this in the future, you can:
1. Review our Community Standards to understand what kind of sharing is allowed on Facebook.
2. Only message people you already know.
3. Only send friend requests to people you know.

We understand that you may have had good intentions or may have not known about our policies on acceptable behavior, and we also understand that this block can be frustrating. To help keep Facebook open and welcoming, we try to prevent people from unintentionally misusing Facebook, even if you felt that what you did was acceptable.

As much as we want to, the temporary limit is something automatically lifted on the stated number of days.

Therefore, we recommend you to wait until the block has been lifted off. Please bear in mind that we won't be able to lift the block early as the system detected the violation. Therefore, you will need to stay until the block has been lifted off.

I hope the information provided helps. We thank you for your kind understanding. Since the issue has been addressed, this case ticket is now closed."

they refuse to give me more informations about what systems detected or why is this limit, also time to lift is secret...

a SM management company tracking >2000 news and media FB publishers is saying this is widespread in a Gizmodo [gizmodo.com] article:
Sources who spoke to Gizmodo all say the shift started in February and worsened in the months following.
...
Clicks coming from Facebook have been in decline for about a year, but that drop accelerated rapidly in May 2023, according to Echobox, which collects data from more than 2,000 publishers worldwide. Across Echobox’s clients, the share of traffic coming from Facebook fell about 50% from summer of last year.
