Meta has said it could remove news content from Facebook in the U.S. if a new Bill is passed requiring payment for news content.

The legislation is the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) and would mean that publishers would be in a better position to collectively bargain with a social media company for a share of the ad revenue.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said: "If Congress passes an ill-considered journalism bill as part of national security legislation, we will be forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether".

The "bill" has been around for a few years, but at this time is being tied to a "must pass" bit of legislation that many are unhappy with. The chances of passing are pretty low, but if it IS passed, big tech will probably make a LOT of changes regarding "news media" in the future.

Time will tell.

Late report: appears JCPA has been removed and will not be voted on at this time.

Zuckerberg will not have to make any changes at the moment.
