Mark Zuckerberg has announced the rebranding of Facebook, and it's going to be called, Meta, to reflect the changes that Zuckerberg sees, the metaverse.
We just announced that we’re making a fundamental change to our company. We’re now looking at and reporting on our business as two different segments: one for our family of apps and one for our work on future platforms. Our work on the metaverse is not just one of these segments. The metaverse encompasses both the social experiences and future technology. As we broaden our vision, it’s time for us to adopt a new brand.

To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta.

Our mission remains the same — it’s still about bringing people together. Our apps and their brands aren’t changing either. We’re still the company that designs technology around people.

Heh ... after this amount of time the news feeds I read daily still use the phrase "Facebook, now called Meta" whenever referring to Facebook.

Could be a significant part of the press will not let Facebook forget they are Facebook?

Maybe, but more likely is that every site and company on earth invested heavily into promoting their own "facebook" pages that they don't want to confuse by calling them meta pages.

Kids are not clamoring to join "Meta", quite the opposite, they seem to ridicule it in various communities they enjoy.

1. people don't "Alphabet" search terms.
2. also, Facebook is still "Facebook".

In this article from October:

[hypebeast.com...]

there's a phrase (quoted from Zuckerberg) that I hadn't noticed in other articles:

metaverse-first

More than a decade ago, Luke Wroblewski popularised the term mobile-first (see: [lukew.com...]

Within 2-3 years of the first references to mobile-first, another concept emerged - due in no small part to the explosion in popularity of the mobile internet: offline-first (see: [alistapart.com...]

But the term metaverse-first, while presumably styled after the concepts above (are there any other -first terms?) is not like the others.

The first is about getting away from hardware that sits on top of a table and prioritising devices that will fit in your pocket.

The second is about getting away from internet infrastructure - prioritising never needing to be online at all after the initial download.

What is metaverse-first about getting away from and / or prioritising?
