WhatsApp has started rolling out its much criticised new Privacy Policy which after rolling back on it's take-it-or-leave-it approach has decided to slowly remove services from users not accepting the new policy.
At that time, you’ll encounter limited functionality on WhatsApp until you accept the updates. This will not happen to all users at the same time.

You won’t be able to access your chat list, but you can still answer incoming phone and video calls. If you have notifications enabled, you can tap on them to read or respond to a message or call back a missed phone or video call.
After a few weeks of limited functionality, you won’t be able to receive incoming calls or notifications and WhatsApp will stop sending messages and calls to your phone.

In effect, it'll become useless later, instead of instantly.

As far as I see it, the way it's going to pressurise users will end up creating FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). However, the lengthy privacy policy wording is unlikely to be read by many, and I suspect many will simply accept.

There are alternatives out there not owned by Facebook, and, I suspect the main ones will see another surge in users: Signal and Telegram

Apparently, India is also concerned about this, and i'm surprised it's not getting more traction.
