Full disclosure, I am a grumpy old person but I've not done this... yet.

It's been amusing to see an increase in the number of people "yelling" at FB ads.

"Keep your spam off MY facebook"
"MY facebook is for friends and family, NOT your stupid marketing"
"F*** OFF"

For the most part our sponsored posts generate some really good, healthy discussions and interactions but there's always a few of these grumps sprinkled in. With the exception of the most graphic images, we tend to leave the comments up.

I guess what is most interesting to me is how people have come to believe that they have some sort of ownership interest in "their" facebook page.

I don't even think many people see their Facebook page as a separate entity. People are using their phone, tablet or computer without having the notion that the actual information they see may have traveled thousands of kilometers/miles just milliseconds ago. It is not just that your ad is polluting their Facebook page, in their way of thinking you are directly invading their device in their cozy environment.

It's why Facebook, Google, etc. have been able to grow at the rate they have. Education in how internet activity affects your daily life is not accelerating at the same pace. It's really sad to see because a lot of social media users think that the platform was built for them. It never was and never will be. It will be catered to them, so long as it doesn't impede on increased ad visibility and sales.

The worst part is that when you actually try to explain why this happens to people, they genuinely don't care. It is incredibly frustrating.

I can imagine younger people not realising, but for the vast majority, I

I think that this is because we see a lot of ads around us everywhere, literally, everywhere we turn. And we see ads numbers increasing on social media platforms that we use daily (I'm pretty sure that before we didn't see this many ads). So people get angrier and angrier, you can't really do much about it except to try and make them not so intrusive.

I like to have a bit of fun with badly targeted ads. Just in the last week I've had ads from:

1) An immigration lawyer several hundreds of miles away (to visit them I'd also have to pass through two major conurbations); and
2) An ad asking 'What do millennials think?' - my daughter is a millennial, and Facebook has my true d.o.b.
