The WSJ is reporting that Facebook has backed off from its plan to sell ads on the popular messaging platform, WhatsApp.

That does leave me wondering what it's going to do to monetise the WhatsApp platform; it must have something else up it's sleeve.

... although the messages themselves are encrypted, so they say.
the fact that person A is messaging person B on a regular basis is probably valuable data for someone, somewhere!

the obvious money makers are ads and subscription - however i can't imagine many would pay to use the service. it will be interesting to see what ideas they come up with.maybe it will be bundled up in a whole package of services at some point - which customers will pay for one way or another.
