Facebook has said and new Group Chat has been removed, with existing chats continuing until 22 August. After that time, the chats will be archived. Facebook has said a new feature will be released at some point.
Wonder why? Features are created, installed, and sometime later withdrawn or changed. Makes one wonder what is going on.

"However, you will still be able to start a group chat with anyone who you are friends with or are connected to in Messenger."
Does this mean you used to be able to do group chat with others you are not friends with? This contains the groups to only those you know, markedly limiting the group's breadth. Think "distributed mass planning" for protests.
Google adds and removed various tools on a regular basis, so not a new strategy.
