Collectively, the employees described a workplace that is perpetually teetering on the brink of chaos. It is an environment where workers cope by telling dark jokes about committing suicide, then smoke weed during breaks to numb their emotions. Itís a place where employees can be fired for making just a few errors a week ó and where those who remain live in fear of the former colleagues who return seeking vengeance.

Is the web becoming a different place for some tech workers? The average webmaster won't have these problems, but what happens at the top at fb (the big fish) tends to trickle down.

Why be concerned if you do social media via fb? People under that kind of stress can make or tank a user/site in an instant.

A terrible job, not surprising there's mental consequences when watching that kind of stuff for large parts of the day

I've seen enough bad taste content on FB for me to unfriend some that seem to think it's normal.
I can't image how awful some of that content must be, and I don't want to know.

Actually, I feel for some of these folks shoved into a moderator role ... they don't have real life experiences to prep them for some of the despicable things human beings can do to one another. And even with training (think police, fire, soldiers, medics) it can be quite difficult to deal with horror on a day to day basis. (Been there, done that, back in the day)...

"Moderators in Phoenix will make just $28,800 per year ó while the average Facebook employee has a total compensation of $240,000."

Ouch, that's Zucked up!

@$15/hr (dream wage) that's only 1920 hours a year. A regular year is 2832 hours/yr (40 hour week, 2 weeks unpaid vacation) ... I bet these folks don't have benefits to treat their PTSD ... If they ARE working 40hr weeks then they're only getting $10.17 an hour and probably do have benefits that will allow them to seek treatment.

Contract workers are frequently hired on a part time basis by Facebook and Google. That way they can get away from providing various benefits.

Exactly! (That could cause PTSD all by itself!)
