According to a report on the BBC, Facebook is using many hidden techniques to thwart the ad-blockers, and some of it would surprise, and others not.

  • breaking up the word "sponsored" into small chunks only one or two letters long
  • inserting extra letters, as in "SpSonSsoSredS", hidden to the viewer
  • adding the word to all regular posts on the news feed, even ones that are not ads, and then using another piece of code to hide it on the non-ads

  • It's a war out there, with Facebook constantly changing the code.

I do the same, essentially. It's not too difficult when you serve your own ads. Unless you're a major target like Facebook, of course.

The fact they are working so hard means the ad-blockers are working. :)

Nothing different than human history. Ordinary escalation. Starting with tooth and nail we are about WWI right now ... dealing with gas... Over the next year or so might get to WWII ...

So far, no knock out blow. And if one is finally delivered it just might be WWIII!
