Facebook has been labelled "deceptive" by a campaign group for the way it handles information people use to make their account more secure.

Many people use their phone as a second identity check when logging into their account.

Investigations have shown this data is being used to customise adverts users see on Facebook.

In the past, Facebook said the adverts were caused by software errors. Now it says they help "personalise" the site.

I wouldn't call it a scandal, one need to be very naive to believe that Internet giants are not exploiting every single piece of information they collect (sarcasm)

Most on the internet are extremely naive..anyone who uses ads, ( be it on facebook or elsewhere ) or adsense, is counting on it..

What struck me interesting was the facebook denials, until it was proven..
I wouldn't call it a scandal,

You are probably correct :)
"scandal" has a harsher meaning in English than in French where the word comes from..I was thinking in French when I saw the BBC story , even though it was in English..Had multiple screens open in more than one language..
Hence wrote the subject title in Franglais..
mea culpa..

fb will divert before admitting they are "stretching the envelope" with user PII. Strangest mindset I've seen in a generation or two:

They are a business based on user data, yet make every effort to avoid coming right out and say that. Making money is not a crime. Hiding how you do it might be unethical (not necessarily a crime) UNLESS one crows at the top of the lungs "we don't do that kind of thing!" and when caught try to feature it as "improving user experience".

What the last two years have revealed is causing quite a few to either limit that activity, or leave altogether. It is a mess.

Hee. I'd forgotten that line (can only ever remember “I fart in your general direction”). Further hampered by the fact that ni is a legitimate French word, I was thinking along the lines of alternative rude meanings of sureau.

Well, it could happen.

Since this is about phones and ads... one COULD stop accessing fb via phone. :)

Hey, just a thought (in any language).
