There's a demonstration of still photographs brought to life with the latest developments worked on in a Facebook funded project.

I';m not sure if you can see the video on this page, but if you can, it's quite strange to see some of the characters smile.

Watch this space on Facebook for this to appear sometime.

They hope a lot of fun things can come out of this. I see a potential for creating more fake news. Otherwise, it is neat and creepy.

Does this mean people can finally stop creating "videos" of static graphics/pictures that don't do anything?

The video in the BBC article requires Flash, so I watched a YouTube version of the same video...

The examples shown were more hideous than I had even begun to imagine. There's the inevitable Mona Lisa wink and a grin, and much, much more. ;)

Looks like it's a dedicated application based on the old morphing software paradigm of mapping start points to end points on facial features. Ahh, where are the old blinking gifs when we need them?

The talking head who explains the potential of the software seemed embarrassed even to be talking about the examples they had....
There are lots of fun applications that we can think of.... It's not gonna cure cancer, but there are lots of fun things that can come out of this

Eventually, IMO, it might be used to cheat lip-sync of deceased celebrities to extend their commercial careers, and to create fake quotes on disposable "news" sites.
