The 2 bots were left unsupervised and created their own language.

Facebook had to turn off two of its robot when it was discovered that (a) they were talking to each other in (b) a language of their very own that they created themselves.

"Shuts Down" is kind of strong, the article here: [webmasterworld.com...] says that situation developed during some programming research and the chat-bots were never live. The research was ended without any implementation. ;)

Sure, the site I linked to is one of the "news" sites Facebook uses, so there's likely some collusion between the two to hype up the story.

The ‘bots are named Bob and Alice and scientists switched them off recently when the code they were sharing among themselves turned out to be much more than incomprehensible “1”s and “0”s.

Let's not forget Facebook was the fertile ground zero that spawned most of the the fake news stories.
