Facebook has said it'll start playing movies with the sound on. How annoying is that going to be! Up until now, they'd start playing with the sound off.

To stop this intrusion, and annoying other people around you, go to the settings "Videos in News Feed Start With Sound" and turn it off.

It's things like this that make Facebook very annoying, and may just be a step too far for some.

Heh! I can picture someone at a meeting checking in only to find out about this the embarrassing way...

Somehow I don't think FB's motive was to “out” people using their product at the wrong time ;)

I fell in love with Firefox when they added the feature that shows which tab is making the noise. (I tend to click Close by mistake for Silence, which serves them right.)

There will be some busted office workers.

There probably will be some busted office workers.
I really dislike the idea of the intrusion. I'm sure you've sat next to someone that is on their smartphone, doing whatever. If they start watching a youtube video with the sound on and i'm next to them, I would find that intrusive. The fact that this will automatically play puts them at a disadvantage as they scrabble to turn the sound off.

I am REALLY against anything that auto plays, especially with sound. I frequently listen to classical music, using headphones, through my laptop while doing work or reading the news. Then suddenly, there is some annoying video or commercial/ad that auto plays and blasts my ears.

When I first started making websites for bands, they all wanted autoplay of their music as soon as the visitor landed on their page. Nearly impossible to talk them out of it.

I often presented the scenario of the office worker getting in trouble, then subconsciously blaming the band. Occasionally that worked.

Occasionally that worked.

It might work with Facebook, too, if great numbers of corporate networks start blocking them.

Fortunately Firefox has a mute (can be switched on permanently). FB is not doing users any favors with this ... nor those other sites out there that have video/audio activated on page load.
