So I know that facebook started pushing video awhile back. So lots of publishers are now creating videos and publishing them on facebook

This is what I don't understand. When I click on these videos I am not taken to the publishers site. I stay in facebook. I play the video and see 0 ads. The publishers I see doing this generate their income via ads. (And their site are overloaded with ads)

Am I missing something. Thats great if the video gets lots of views but how does it help the publisher. I don't see how they earn ad revenue. Since they are not taken to the site they are not able to add the visitor to an email list or build much brand awareness. I assume I am missing something.

Partially answering my own question. It looks like facebook offers revenue share for video to some publishers. I don't know why I am not seeing any ads still for the videos but I assume that the revenue share is why people are publishing them.

Also I am not sure how to sign up for the video revenue share. It looks like at some point it was invite only. Not sure if that has changed.

There's another reason, and that's for branding. As FB has become the go-to place, for a major publisher they have to be there.
From Facebook's point of view, they want you to stay on their site and not go anywhere else.

They can build a Facebook remarketing audience of people who viewed their video(s).
