As a company, who should we (not) like?

We're a company, selling both to private persons and resellers (through our webshop) and we recently created a company Facebook page.

I'm fairly new to this, and was wondering what kind of people/companies/etc we should like (or certainly not like) with our page. Or don't companies like other Facebook-users?

I'm not certain if this is the right forum to ask this question, but I'm sure you will tell me if it's not.

With my Company pages I generally Like other companies in my industry, suppliers, distributors, bloggers who discuss my industry...that sort of stuff. I don't Like totally unrelated things. ex. If you were an industrial widget manufacturer you would't Like animated cat GIFs pages or epic fail videos.

Yes Maggy29, this is the correct place.

bill's got it just right. By keeping likes in the theme of your sector, you're building a picture of relevance.

Obviously, make sure that you give your end users and suppliers every opportunity to "like" your business by putting the button on all your external communications.
Oh, and don't be afraid to ask for a "like" in a nice way, of course. For example, in customer service messages, "and if you thought our company and its service was great, please "like" our Facebook page. Thank you" Add a button or link in the message.

@Bill and @engin Thanks for the replies. I figured that liking cats images wouldn't be smart in our business:-)

What about Liking pages of resellers? Since we have a webshop ourselves as well, I would feel like I'd be trying to "steal" their clients. Or am I wrong about that?

That's the sort of Page you'll want to Like. It's industry related and relevant in my book. I'd think the re-seller would be glad to have a Like from the official supplier and not take it the wrong way. You could always rescind your Like if they took issue with it.
