Facebook Lite appears to be aimed at emerging markets, but I can see why we all may want that, especially in some circumstances.

Today we’re introducing Facebook Lite, a new version of Facebook for Android that uses less data and works well across all network conditions. Facebook Lite For Android: Uses Less Data [newsroom.fb.com]

Despite their claims that the app was available in Asia, I couldn't get it in Japan. But that is not likely a target market...

Japan's not much of a Facebook country Bill. They prefer Twitter, not sure why it's not available on your end because I've downloaded it here in the Philippines.

Honestly, I think it's aimed at third world countries with slow Internet. Regular FB is image-heavy and takes time to load if your Internet is as slow as a snail.

You're likely correct about targeting low-bandwidth areas. However, it would be nice not to have all that FB app bloat.

I got used to launching my mobile browser & connecting to the FB mobile site. Not all the features of the app, but enough to check my posts & comment. I was using an older Android phone that had run out of on-board memory for any additional apps and the FB took a lot. Just got a new phone so I may install a FB app again, maybe this lite version.
