That's a lot of users! I downloaded the app some time back but have hardly used it.

I wonder how it's affecting the traditional text message volumes. Surely, those volumes must be going down.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that WhatsApp has more than 700 million monthly active users. Additionally, every day our users now send over 30 billion messages. WhatsApp Has Over 700 Million MAUs [m.facebook.com]

I don't have whatsapp, but my wife and I prefer to use Line to communicate with each other, and she does use both whatsapp and Line to do business and communicate with her family back in her home country.

It's pretty good, but I don't know if it really is all that much better than regular old text messaging.

For the most part, I don't see any tangible benefit as I get shed loads of free text I never use on my phone.

The only time is becomes of benefit is when i'm out of my contract geography and charges apply to any texts sent.

I use WhatsApp a lot more than text messaging... initially primarily to keep in touch with my family overseas, but more and more for messaging friends locally too.

The group functionality is great for organising events, but I think it's the ability to easily send photos that is the primary motivating factor for me.
