So, twitter is up with the kids, and facebook is down. Who'd have thought that, eh!
I would imagine these trends will come and go all the time as one social network is fashionable, and another declines.
Are 13 to 17-year olds an important group for Facebook? Perhaps i'm wrong, but I wouldn't have thought they'd have a great deal of buying power.

Facebook Inc. (FB:US) is getting less and less cool, at least among teens. Report: Facebook Less Cool For Kids [businessweek.com]
A report today by Frank N. Magid Associates Inc. found that the portion of 13- to 17-year-old social-media users in the U.S. on Facebook slipped to 88 percent this year from 94 percent in 2013 and 95 percent in 2012. In the same period, Twitter Inc. and messaging applications rose in popularity in that age group, the study showed.

Wow ..it took Frank N. Magid Associates Inc and businessweek until now to notice this..even those of us who don't use FB have known for the past year that it's popularity was falling off with teens..i think some of us even mentioned it here..

Well I can speak from a bit of experience here with my nephew. He stopped using facebook once his parents started watching his posts. When he does post there, it is so PC, it won't cause him any trouble at home. They use other methods to chat with friends that parents can't follow there ever word. They use apps to text message, and avoid the built in text message due to the parents ability to view them.

You're joking, right? Certain big-ticket items are obviously off limits to minors. But for most teenagers in the English-speaking world, 100% of their income is disposable. (How much of yours is disposable? Mine's generally less than 25%-- and that's if you count groceries on the "disposable" side.)

Like Lucy says 100% disposable income..and "Pester power"..Plus get them while they are young, and you can sell to them for life* ( allowing for changes as to which brands are in fashion )...*Slight variation on the "Jesuit principle"..

It's not just buying power. Advertisers are in some cases paying for likes. Their matching algo is terrible and you end up receiving a very mixed bag in terms of demographics. I suspect the teenage user is more likely to respond to a "call to like" something.

Twitter is also much more user friendly in terms of mobile usage. Not so much for wall/timeline reading, but messaging each other as opposed to paying for an SMS message.

Mostly yes, but for kids who may not be on a contract and using pay as you go sim cards they will be paying. here it's about 10p per message.

PAYG sims here have all move to free unlimited SMS..

In line with 30 ( cancel at any time no penalty ) day contracts..€2.00 =2 hours unlimited calls to fixed and mobile lines ( all operators ) in France..500megs if internet at 3G or4G..free unlimited SMS and MMS..so kids are not forced to use Facebook et al to avoid big bills.

Means a lot of us here have more than one mobile , or dual sim mobiles..or as in our family of 3 we have between us 6 mobiles..3 are mine..1 with unlimited worldwide calls, SMS, MMS, to fixed and mobile numbers..and 20 gigs of 3G or 4G..cost €16.00 per month..no contract..cancel when I want..
