Facebook, a service built on real names and real identities, will tomorrow start allowing prominent public figures to verify their accounts and then opt to display a preferred nickname instead of their birth name. Those with verified accounts will gain more prominent placement in Facebook’s “People To Subscribe To” suggestions.

No insult to any facebook employees, but I do not think I would want to submit a copy of any government issued photo ID to them given the information that may be contained thereon.

If you're a leading personality, and subject to fake accounts that may be misleading to their fans, I can see the value in it.

I am not saying this is not useful and does not have value. My thought is in regards to personal identifiable information that facebook people do not need to know that may be printed on a government issued ID. It has a potential for identity theft.
