Facebook should allow under 13s says Mark Zuckerberg

At the moment that age limit is dictated by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act which was made Federal Law in America in 1998.

But Zuckerberg says he's willing to fight to change the law.

"My philosophy is that for education you need to start at a really, really young age.

"Because of the [legal] restrictions we haven't even begun this learning process.

"If they're lifted then we'd start to learn what works."

My initial reaction to this is "what about the things that don't 'work'"

Can't baby them forever. Requiring uses to enter a birthdate older than 13 years and checking a box declaring you are that age is hardly a barrier that 12 year olds aren't able to circumvent.

At the very least there should be a special account type for youth that parents get auto notifications about. Let kids have an account and let parents monitor it.

When has banning kids from something ever stopped them from acutally doing it?

This always comes down to the same thing. A law isnt' going to stop kids, only good parenting will help to guide children in the right direction.
