I know this might seem off topic, but it concerns "advertising" a local service via a facebook PERSONAL profile, not a business / fan / group page.

If you have a local service that you try to promote in your personal page / profile, Is it bad to have lots of friends who are out of your area?

In essence, if I really want my timeline updates to be seen by people in my immediate area, should I get rid of friends who are NOT in my immediate area?

Does facebook limit the percentage of people who see your timeline updates?

Or do your timeline updates go to all your friends?

Thanks in advance.

You can organize your friends into groups and make one for "Local" then local updates can be directed only to that group. Your likes from local would be local. Friends not on the Local list may not even see the updates.

(To late to edit the previous comment) Facebook does not deliver all your timeline updates to all your friends with or without groups. People who will see the updates more often are people who Like, Share and Comment on your updates. Focusing updates on a group of friends can help because your local updates would be most relevant to Friends in that group. More likely to be seen = more likely to Like, Share and Comment.

Thank you for the explanation.

So in short, try to target updates to the most relevant people in order to increase the percentage of likes / shares / comments, right?

Also, would it make sense to go out and delete / unfriend people who are not in my geographic target altogether?

In short, would it be best to have 20 friends in the immediate geographic area, or 200 friends with 180 outside of the area and only 20 in the area?

Thanks in advance.

If they aren't your friends and you don't follow or like what they post, unfriend away.

An account that is intended to drive benefit to a local business should try for more local friends, participate in their updates and expand friends by interacting with more locals on their posts. Maybe look for related local business pages to follow to scout for interactive new friends.

Added: I am sure that having large numbers of friends helped more in the past, but in reality, active friends get your word spread around better than a bigger number can.
