Those guys must have been keen to get that gTLD!

Subject to payment of the winning price and meeting all other criteria for eligibility, the winner will enter ICANN's contracting process to sign a Registry Agreement to operate the gTLD.
Twelve applicants participated in the auction for APP. Charleston Road Registry Inc. prevailed with a winning price of $25,001,000.ICANN .APP Auction, Winning Bidder Pays $25,001,000 [icann.org]

I love the 1,000 at the end. It suggests a bunch of guys who all came into the auction with an ironclad rule of not one penny over 25 mill and then one of them blinked but everyone else held fast.

Useful to say that Charleston Road Registry Inc is Google.

25m isn't that much for them.

Yeah, I think people forget that's Google.

That's how you bid to win on ebay, bid one cent, or one dollar over.

Why was G so determined to align G with this new TLD?

Will an .app registration include TOS / TCU defining G's rights to access data generated by .app sites/apps?

Do app-landers pose a threat to the crown . . so G acquires rights, control, access via lording over the domain of .app?

Fascinating move. I can see G offering tools / services to facilitate the building of apps . . as a calculated move against Apple / AppsStore.

Such a lovely tangled WWW . . err . . whatever world appsworld "is" . .
