Select it in your register account area. Most registers will allow you to have the option of public or private. Most not all registers have a small fee for this option.

Privacy cannot be applied to all domains - for instance, I don't think you can hide registration details for .us domains (but I could be mistaken).

You can ask your domain provider to whoisprotection, i've received it for free. That's the way i've done it.
