If you search for "123 example" which domain would search engines prefer to display first?

123-example.com
or
123example.com

(both sites have 100% same content and everything)

[Moderator Note: Please note that posts using "pretend" domain names that are actually registered domain names will be nuked. Please get used to using Example.com.]

Search engines will treat both equally. However, you'll get more type-ins from the non-hyphenated version.

To hell with search engines, what about your customers? They are the ones who supply your income!

sound it out

The <hyphenated versio> sounds really silly when you recite it over the phone.
And yes you will have to, many times.

No hyphen. If only for the reason above, when you tell someone about it you don't want to have to remind them about the "hyphen" every time.

Or just get both and have one redirect to the other and get the best of both worlds.
