Registrar registering variants of my domain?

This is truly quite very weird

So I registered a domain today with Moniker. It's just a random word I've had in my head which I thought sounded cool. I haven't mentioned to anyone this word and besides no one cares know it anyway.

BUT. I did a search on the same word except, I substituted an "i" with a "y". It appears to be taken already. That's all cool except the whois is giving me 3.3.2008 as the registration date, registered throught Network Solutions. That is today btw. What the hell? How could someone know about my domain already, and care enought to register a similar? Am I missing something?

It seems that starting about 2 years ago they been monitoring domain name queries
to register names that they can re-sale for more money.

Good practice is to run list of domain names to see what is available.
Then make decision what names you like to keep and register those minutes later.

Thanks artek. Actually I did a little more research.

NS is taking advantage of the tasting period. I tested searching another random word through NS (came available) and amazingly 2 minutes later the word appeared to be taken when I searched it through Moniker. So I guess the word will be free in 5 days.

The domain that you did a whois search for at Network Solutions is available for you to register at Network Solutions.

This is a recent predatory practice of Network Solutions, and has created a lot of controversy.

You can read more about it in this thread, in this forum: Network Solutions claimed caught front-running [webmasterworld.com].

If you do register the domain through them, there is a potential class-action suit against them concerning this practice. Do a search of this forum, or Google, for more info on that.

For years, I queried domain names with GoDa... and did not have this problem.
Once you put name that you like in GoDa... shopping cart it is protected and secured for you every time.
