I am hoping that someone can help me with this; I have a client that would like to archive tentpole websites. Does anyone have any info about this.

If they are a media client they may be talking about Tent pole programming which, according to wiki is:
In the world of motion pictures and television programming, a tent pole is when the strength of a central program or franchise is used to balance out the performance of a movie studio or television network. An example of this strategy in television is to schedule a well-known program alongside new or unknown programming, in an attempt to keep viewers watching after the flagship program is over.

I would say that it would be the main site of a group of sites that would attract the bulk of the visitors while the lesser known sites benefit from the more popular one.
