Misspelled Domain Names

Search engine penalty?

Do search engines penalize for a domain name that is a misspelling of a common word?

I ask because I wonder about the sites whose domain name is a misspelling of a word, but they've developed it into a brand (totally unrelated to the properly spelled word), and aren't just typosquatting.

Thanks in advance.

IF I was helping to build the search engine I would be inclined to parse base URLs for typos of common words and filter them for delivery to the search basement.

That said, I don't know but you might try a few Google searches using the inurl: function to see if there's anything in the SERPs that employs typos AND THEN see where they rank.

I hope this doesn't happen for the sake of some typo domains that only look like typos.

How would the engine tell the difference between a brand name like "Blogz" and a typo of "Blogs"?

That's not a real brand name -- I don't think.
