may lead to competition for the name
If you don't mind me asking are the 1,000 domains domains that only you would be interested in registering if they expire OR do these 1,000 domains have a broader appeal?
If no one else would likely want them then your primary competition will be the "domain tasters". They're a pretty efficient machine. They're also quick to discard the domains if they have no traffic.
OTOH, if the 1,000 domains are domains that likely would appeal to others there's little point in tracking them. Chances are they will all be captured by the various drop catching/auctioning systems. That will require you to track each domain to its auction partner (Example: NetSol -> SnapNames, GoDaddy -> TDNAM) and you will have to bid against everyone else interested in the domain.
BTW, I found a few scripts that do this.
