When should a website use a .Org domain?

Are there limits, restrictions or recognized practices for choosing a TLD?

Hi the .com names I want are all gone, what are your opinions on using a .org for a site.

It will be a information site which will eventuially start selling products in around 6 months.

cheers

usually .org is a name used by non-profits and can confuse the consumer for that reason.

I recommend being creative in finding an appropriate name.

.ORG was created in 1984 as one of the Internet's original top-level domains (TLDs) and was designated as "open" and "unrestricted," meaning that anyone can register a .ORG site, but it primarily is used by noncommercial entities around the world, including nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, philanthropies, charities, religious organizations, educational and cultural institutions, arts organizations, sports clubs, and others. Today, .ORG is a recognized brand that includes the Internet's most trusted Web sites, sites that also are known for providing valuable information. (emphasis added)

IMHO it's a matter of focus. Non-profit is not the same as non-income producing. If you're going to use an .Org domain then build something of real material value to the user/visitor.

It's an interesting fact that revenue often flows from a focus not on producing income but on producing value.

Agreed. I use a few .org sites. I prefer them over .net since they are traditionally used by reliable and trustworthy organizations.

But be sure to make your site/content fit the mold.

I would use a .info or .biz rather than a .org

.info or .biz over .org? hmmm that doesn't seem right, I guess it depends on the type of website you want to establish.

I want to build a couple of directory websites and am considering buying the keyword.com (at about $800) or get keyword.org/.net for $7

How about the .net suffix - any thoughts on this one, I tend to think that .org os not a good choide.

I bet that would be untrue if an actual audit of some sort were performed. I'd bet there are more .orgs regged for commercial reasons.

I guess if your site is an e-commerce site, then .com or .biz would be the best bets.

I have two websites, both are similar subjects and both are .org. One is strictly informational and the second one is our group pertaining to the first one, that provides a free service.

My e-commerce site I'm developing is .com. Then again, I do have a registered company name... so .com is appropriate.
