hi,
my domain name is presently registered with 1&1. i also have an eshop (previously with 1&1) but now with another company.

the eshop company is asking £25/$40 to transfer my .co.uk domain - an amount that i think is rather excessive.

questions:
(a) to avoid paying this i am considering a 301 redirect - i believe that is s/engine friendly.

however i dont see any reference in a 1&1 faq search etc.

can any one tell me how to, or even if it is possible with 1&1?

(b)overall, would it be better/easier just transferring the domain to godaddy or similar?

thanks.

I will simply note that my domain is not through my host, never has been, never will be. It wasn't when I first arrived to the site, I've not seen any good reason to change the status quo, and I've read numerous horror stories where someone dinna actually have control of their domain name, the host did.

Whether you oughta leave the doamin name at the present place or move it, no comment, as I'm rather perturbed at the place this morning so I fear there would be a lack of objectivity on my part, even if I strived to set personal feelings aside.

$40 to transfer a domain is ridiculous.

Use your own registrar and transfer the domain there. Always keep control of your own domains.

Is the eshop(?) domain also a .co.uk and registered in your name? For a registrar to transfer a .co.uk they simply change their tag with the new registrars tag. Registrars are allowed to charge an admin fee to do this but most either don't bother or allow you change the tag yourself via a control panel.

You can get Nominet involved and they will overide the registrar and change the tag. Unfortunately, this will also cost you but only £15 plus vat.

Regarding to 301 redirect, where does 1and1 come into this? You moved the domain away from them or did I get that wrong?

The good thing about this is you only ever get stung once. Next time, make sure the domain name is with a company that will give you full control of it.

That kind of fee to transfer a domain is outrageous.

Time for a better resistrar.Don't delay, transfer the domain elsewhere. If you don't keep control of your own domains you will be in for a lot of grief down the road.
