Anyway, the renewal is for the coming year, commencing in December. My question is this, do I have to pay this extortionate fee or can I just ask them to swap the domain registry information to my company (We own the company name in Ireland) without much hassle and renew it myself for under half the price, or is this a bill I'll just have to pay with gritted teeth and get out of this situation after payment?
A week or so ago, I received a bill for the renewal of two .ie domain name at a whopping combined price of £480 ($852/708Euros) from a comopnay who used to manage our domain renewals some time ago. I guess these Irish domian have bene left with them by accident.Well this is a bit extortionate even for a .ie domain renewal. You can move your .ie domain before December.
Yes you can change from your current hoster to another. You can have the billing contact of the .ie domain changed to an IEDR reseller and they will certainly charge you a lower price - typically in the 60 to 100 Euro per year range per domain. The details of transferring the Billing Contact of the .ie domain are here:

The resellers (equivalent to registrars in the real world) list for .ie cctld are here: [iedr.ie...]
If it is just domain pointing rather than full hosting, some .ie resellers are offering the wholesale .ie price (the price that IEDR charges resellers for .ie domains) which is around 49 Euros.
If you need any more data or have questions about .ie, then pm me. I'm not a reseller - I just provide the only reliable statistical reporting on the Irish hosting business. Are you sure these guys are not charging for hosting as well as the .ie domain name?
