The registrar offers a storefront for your site.
Thus far I've done alright with it, not as highly planned. Its hard to be recognized in this industry. Although I am trying.
Margins are very slim with domain names. If you wanna compete with low end prices of $8 or so a domain, you wont make much per domain. Sometimes with specials even loose money on the domain to attract customers.
Non - domain products is where you make more of the profit.

As it happens, my original post was a bit misleading. I don't actually want to resell domains for a profit. I want to include a domain in a product I'm selling and therefore I'd like to be able to get a wholesale license plus let people search for available domains from my website.
I'm not clear whether I should start by applying to be a registrar or I need to buy through registrars.
In regards to letting people search for available domains from my website, you may be able to find a script that will let you use it and it returns you the availability of such domain. Or Have a form that will pop up a new window with a registrars site that shows the availability of such a domain.
I think applying to be a reseller will allow you to control how much you will pay per domain name, but if your not planning to use the reseller for profit, It will be wise to possibly look for a reasonably priced registrar to do all your domain name registrations with.
