How Do I Determine a Domain's Value?

I am looking at buying a .com domain from a company who are not using it, they just have it as a holding page and have done for years.

I have contacted them asking for a price and they said it isnt really for sale, but they will consider any offer.

I want to make an offer, but dont want to get fleeced. How can i determine how much i should offer or how much the domain is worth?

Wide open. In the 90's I sold a fairly lame, useless domain for US$7500 (and the domain still has never become a website). I get probing offers for my domains at $75 all the time and I trash them immediately because $75 is a joke, and even slightly offensive because they're wasting my time and apparently assuming I'm brain-dead.

If somebody comes at me with a $300 offer, I may think it's too low but at least it's just this side of reasonable and I'm not offended. I could counter with $5000 but at least they've gotten parameters started for negotiation, and we're communicating.

For some, it's worth the registration fee at the lowest cost registrar, and then just barely.

For others, it's worth what you're willing to pay, whether that's $30, 3000, 300,000, or more, based on (a) why you want it and
(b) an objective belief the price is a sound
investment in light of your plans for it.
