.Info Names in my Enom Account

Did I miss something?

This morning when I logged into my enom account I found that I had about 45 new domain names in my account, all with a TLD of .info, with SLD's of names that I registered long ago. Many of the names I have sold or let expire, but now I have the .info versions of them in my account. I've checked with one of my friends and he's reporting the same thing. They all have the expiration date set to 9/28/05.

Did I miss an annoucement or something?

Awhile ago there was a lot of buzz about registrars registering .info domains in other people's names, often a version of a .com name they owned. This practice arose around the time of the .info "give away" - free info domains for 1 year.

Just make certain they're all coded to expire, not auto-renew.

If you sold some of the .com's, you should consider whether the .info versions have any value, before letting them expire. Perhaps the person who acquired the .com wants the .info from you too.

Yeh, these are in my Enom account too, it's related to the period when everyone was giving away 25 .info domains, Enom automatically invented some and stuck them in your account.

I notice that when I look at the details of these .info domains it says "This Domain is registered at: Sipence, Inc." - I've never heard of that company before.

That's an affiliate of Enom's. The speculation is that Enom realized what they were doing wasn't necessarily kosher, so to minimize the risk of losing their right to register .infos, they pulled this trick using a separate entity. Enom manufactured something like 1 million of these domains without direct authorization from anyone.

I'd recommend not renewing anything unless you are convinced the .info domain has actual market value.

However, if you have built an actual site on the corresponding .com domain, you should also consider the question of whether you would mind having someone else register the .info domain after they spot it in the "drop" lists.
