Branding a .org

Instead of a country tld or .com

I'm about to register a .org, for a domain where the .com and the country tld (.nl) are already taken. Is there any chance that visitors will remember the site.org, or will a lot (most?) of them go to the .nl or .com version instead, when trying to revisit?

Did you catch this recent thread on When to use a .Org domain name [webmasterworld.com]?

No I did not, thanks. However, I have read it now, and still see .org as an option. I'm going to provide information which can be very helpful for visitors, and is not about selling a product. I was however planning on putting some ads on it.

I'm still curious if someone has experience with or thoughts on my original question.

You'll get a lot of "bleed" to the .com & .nl domains. You can counter some of this with marketing, but it's still going to happen. Better to come up with an original name where you can reg the .com .nl and .org

Err... what community are you addressing? Dutch or International?

Thanks, stu2! I'm adressing the Dutch community. So, with your advise, I think I'm going to try to come up with something original for a .nl/.com/.org. (which is not that easy..)

Hi,

Even I am owning and running a .ORG which is performing OK.

Never better then .COM/

E.O.D > Content Wins!

But visitors may go to .COM instead of .oRG!

Is the fact visitors often go to the com NOT correct involving medical domain org's, where perhaps org is preferred over com, or equal to com?

Go for some kind of .com - who said that all the good ones are taken? Be creative or buy a registered one, it is worth it compared to alternatives (I run one .net and three .coms).

What is your website about, Kneek? You might not need the .org.

I understand that it's sometimes difficult to dream up a good .com name related to your website content, but if you dream up a catchy memorable name you can always brand it to your website, like you were considering to do with the org. There are a lot of reasonable .com names in the aftermarket for reasonable prices (well if you can find your way thru all the dross out there). Be creative, just as you would in dreaming up an unregistered name.

I agree with most of the above:

Never, ever buy a .org if the .com is in use.

Always buy the .com when you buy the .org (and 301 it) or someone else will get the .com and shaft you (MFA or porn).

Quadrille's 15th law: There are very few honest guarantees in this business (plenty of dishonest ones) - but losing out to the .com ranks up there with the best of them: it's a dead cert.
