I have built a few sites of my own for personal use but don't have any experiece how to set things up with a "client" even though he's a friend.

I have had several clients come to me when the friend/relative/casual aquaintance who registered their domain had packed in web design and moved on to something else. The hassles over domain names have been considerable.
In some cases the peeson who was the admin contact had become uncontactable, in others they had let the domain they they used for the admin contact email go and no longer had a way of using it. In others all of those applied, plus the disappearing designer had registered the domain in his/her name.
So be sure that the admin contact email is one that will still be around when the registration term is up, that someone will have ready access to the CP if you move on, and so forth.
