Excellent find. This shows that .info's are being recognized as a strong domain extension. I have found already many developed .infos and in general, they are well structured, content rich sites.

The "get your free dot info domain" that ran for a number of months corresponded with a significant jump.

Nothing like "25 domains for free for one year" to move those numbers. ;-)

The lurking problem: Who do you think most massively exploited the free domains offer?

Look for a parallel drop in .info domains during the one year renewal period that tracks the freebie period.

Also, to the extent that spammers seized the moment and likely eachregistered hundreds if not thousands of .info domains (using multiple IDs) what effect will that have on .info's reputation? Something akin to what spammers have done via .biz registrations?

Food for thought.

I think a number of 1 word .info domains will do well in the long haul if they are developed. Outside of that it's a dark crystal ball.

Don't know whether I can post the URL or not, but I'd guess the source was: [dailychanges.com...] The figures match what's currently in Googles cache of the page at least.

Nominet provide UK statistics of the current amount of active .uk domains, but I don't know what percentage of these are .co.uk etc.

Of course that we are going to see spammers on .info's, just as with .com's. However, the important difference from a .biz to a .info and the real value from the .info even over the .com for certain types of websites is its purpose (information) and the backing that it has received from solid information sites such as:

Amsterdam
SouthAfrica
Spain
MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority NY)
Webhosting

All these .infos provide a glimpse of what this extension can symbolize.

For the time, I am with you that 1 word .infos are going to get a much easier ride.

The reason that .info has more domains is because of the big marketing drive to sell .info for free to existing gtld domain holders. The marketing drive boosted (artificially) the number of .info domains. In terms of usage, .info is still small.

.eu is not active. The stats for .co.uk are also on the nominet website.

To be fair however, .info did already have a substantial registration base *before* the recent freebie promotion offer. There was a debate that swirled on this board about what the best new domain was...between .info, .us, and .biz. The feeling was that ... in that order ... .info was the best - and by a pretty wide margin. The registrations also seemed to suppose that. So, they havn't come from the bottom ... they've only recently overtaken .org.
