I am looking for a domain name, and found a .info.
are .info names ok? does .com names get preference over .info by search engines? etc.

think about the user more than search engine when choosing a fresh name.

also who owns the .com - .net etc etc of your chosen .info?

I agree. Think about your users. It doesnt matter if your domain is crabbity.bingola if that is what your users know or will know you by.

And as mentioned, check the .com and .net. If there is a well developed site, then you may not only have some competition but you might lose your own users because they might type in the .com first. If there is no web site, or its really just a holding-type page, then you would be fine with the .info as you build your brand. If there is a com or net site that is well developed, I would consider some other domains (maybe grab that particular .info, too, and point it to the domain you finally settle on.)

well, obviously, the .com and others are taken up, otherwise, I'd have bought the .com. When I visit the .com it comes up with a "search the web" page, and the .net version, I get a "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.".

I asked initially about the search engine, and whether or not there was something I should know about a .info before going ahead and registering.
So, I guess if there's nothing odd about it, then it's thumbs up.

search engines don't care what the extension is , .com is the same as .info to them.

Only thing that I don't like about .INFO is that some e-mail systems reject .info as invalid e-mail. That ofcourse is the fault of the systems that still have old mail filters in place (4 letters are not acepted)

Other than that in SERPs it will work just as good as any other extension. An everybody from .NET to .ZW is loosing some traffic to .COM so if it is not com that you are buying .info will work just fine.
